Jamie Smith


Jamie Smith was born in Wales and whilst still at school he studied part-time at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  He later read music at the University of Oxford, and went on to complete a Masters degree at the National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kyiv, Ukraine, graduating with a Distinction in Piano Performance.

During his studies he was awarded numerous awards and scholarships to participate in master classes both in the UK and overseas, and also won prizes at International Piano Competitions.  

Jamie has worked as a lecturer and pianist internationally, performing as a soloist and chamber musician in many concert halls worldwide.  He has worked at the Ufa State Academy of Arts in Russia and also taught classes in piano performance at Zhanjiang Normal University in China.  He has lectured at the Sultan Idris Education University in Malaysia and held the post of ABRSM Malaysia National Coordinator from 2011-2013.

Jamie has worked as a visiting music teacher at King's College school, Cambridge, at Anglia Ruskin University and was Head of Keyboard at St Albans High School for Girls from 2013-2015.  He continues to work as a teacher, accompanist and examiner in Cambridge.  

He has been an examiner for ABRSM since 2011 and has conducted tours in the UK, China, Malaysia and Hong Kong.  He has also presented for ABRSM and has been a mentor on the Professional Development Panel.

How Many Piano Grades Are There
There are 8 grades in piano. The examinations are set by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity. Trinity's music selection tends to be towards pop than classical in (ABRSM) you can not progress beond Grad 5 if you donít have grade 5 theory exam
