The key needs easing. This is a simple job on a piano but more complicated on a digital. Try keeping the piano in a dry place, next to a radiator, this will probably work.
Good luck!

So how about a correspondence course in piano MIT in the UK?. Using modern methods distance learning has come of age with the ability to download coursework and send recorded work over the net. Who would be interested in building a course? There are lots of people with lots of piano knowledge out th...

Gosh, Michael has lots of issues! You have identified lots of weaknesses in the piano trade. Yes, a lot of big piano shops are too snooty. Probably because so many customers are not relly buyers but just people having a look in a shop for the fun of it. This is a danger of a highstreet piano shop. S...

There were evedent delays. It's difficult to know if it's from the TV delay or anything else. My guess is there is a lot of dat tracks going on and it's well possible a lot the acoustic wasn't being broardcast at all. I suppose the question is, have Yamaha taken over from Steinway as the performance...

Yes Barrie, it's not an even playingfield. Also the goalposts have been shortened then moved. But it's not a new phenomenon really. We used to have 3 local butchers and a couple of greengrocers in my town... We now have a supermarket. At least the dirty box-shifters are individuals not multinational...

Hi andy, maybe it was a Marshall and Rose. Lots of tuners have a soft-spot for them, I have one at home. Missed the bits you mentioned, only saw the finale with sir Paul sitting on his Yamaha throne. Hi Gilly Green (or can I call you G?) Business is by definition cynical. That's why the world's so c...

Nettys days numbered
But arn't yammy doing pretty nicely at the moment. The beauty of their position is everybody thinks they're getting a bargain. If yamaha just had a set price for eveything no one would go near it. This well orchestrated feeding frenzy is the best way to unload goods. The nettys are safe for a while ...

I met the famous Randy Potter a few years ago. He's a bit evangelical but I think he runs a top class workshop (any friend of Reblitz can't be all bad.) The course is mainly in video form with a copious amount of written material. I think the idea is that you go to your local group every so often fo...

It's a different instrument (as I always say). Everyone is quite happy with acoustic and electric guitars being different instruments. No amount of pretending will turn a pile of circuitry into a piano. However if you want the best of all options, get a piano with a silent system. That way you can u...

Yes, it's a very long job. It's a bit like deciding to plaster your ceiling in the living room (only harder). It's all down to experience. If you really want to do it have fun practicing on small furniture for a year or so then have a go, it's a big project and they are large surfaces (which is very...

If I had been tuning your piano and foung some sluggish jacks I would use a little proteck and hold the jack with some stout tweesers and gently massaged it round to work the fluid in. It is well known that Eavestaff minis were created by piano-technition loathing sadists. If you need to replace a damper spring you need to set a tent up in the customer's garden. Hi weejay. It's not just crooks who sell crap pianos on e-Bay. If you can't get rid of it any other way (local dealers) then it's the obvious place. Like many tuners I also deal in pianos. I find it rather a difficult situation when called to view a piano for a restoration project for a customer. By the law of averages, the piano they are looking at is not going to be entirely suitable for restoration. You don't want to seem as if you are just p...

Yamaha. Did anyone else notice?
I was one of the 9 trillion people watching the Live 8 concert last night. The Yamaha grand was well in evidence, funny how the logo was in frame for so long... Then when it came to the American event (ending after the UK's) I felt sure it would be a Steinway. But no another Yamaha again with linger...

Gosh a hoo-harr, I just love hoo-harrs. OK, sorry, but back to the dreaded ABS. I'm afraid saying it is 'as good as wood' or even 'better in some respects' is silly. real and unreal pianos
As far as the sound goes... Does it sound like a real piano? you ask. I suppose it's best to think of it as a different instrument, like an electric and acoustic guitar. It is never going to BE an acoustic piano in the same way that a photocopy of the Mona Lisa will never be the original. Hope this ...

OK, so they are entry level instruments. What kind of piano can you get for ?450? At least they have an even touch and evey note works and it is a lot more usable than the average ill-advised piano buy...(which accounts for about 90% of private buys I would say after 15 years in the trade moving pia...

pearl river
Hi piano guy.
What do you make of Steinway using Pearl River to make their new Bostons? (this months MI pro). They must be OK really....
I think the quality is there once they have been thoroughly regulated. As for scale design it's the same as all studio pianos isn't it?

The Diginovas are copies of Rolands (the castings and many components are identical) perhaps they come out of the same factory...it's difficult to tell. It's all down to the Chinese dyanamo which is churning things out at ever decreasing prices, but of consistent high quality. I imagine Roland are p...
