Re: Advice re reconditioned U1 or U3 PLEASE
After a couple of seasons of exposure to central heating any reactions would probably be evident. Best to ask exactly what the 'guarantee' covers and get a copy of it in writing. Please pay for an independent technician to check the piano out before parting with your money.

I will think about that, tho I have my doubts, as the frequency difference between the good and poor high notes is only about 200 HZ. I will check this with younger listeners. Lower 'break' notes and some poor notes in the middle register: This piano is only 18 months old. All problems have been ev...

I agree with a lot of what Joe said, except the point regarding retro Chinese (there are one or two good ones out there). Second hand imports are usually 30 years old at least, been in a very humid environment, (hot steamy summers) and cold and damp in the winter (until recently in Japan most homes ...

B & Q do a decent range of dehumidifiers - I've had a couple from them, very reliable and with a hygrostat setting. The piano at home hardly ever needs tuning and the humidifier has a dust filter which has cut Mrs V's housework by half.

Re: top notes & yamaha C1
Every piano has flaws, when pressing individual notes you can hear the break, when making music not so much. Well said Patrick! Too many people become obsessed with analysing individual notes when they are never played like that in a piece of music. Every note sounds different. Sit back, relax, and...

Is it ivory? The key tops may be celluloid or plastic - better check first, if so a spot of contact adhesive such as Evo stick would do. If they're ivory, first read Barrie's interesting post a while back on the search. The small square of soft green felt is cushion felt from the notch in the hammer...

Re: Size of room for Kawai GM 10
Hello quinie: Nice choice of piano! The piano isn't too big for the room - choose a particular piano which is nice and mellow to start with. If it sounds too loud when you get it home, then your tuner can mellow it down even more. In addition, you may need to deaden the acoustic of the room with car...

Hi Terry: a. Many people comment on these top notes - one observation (with respect to you, and not necessarily your case!) is that as the human ear gets older it doesn't hear the high frequencies as clearly, so much so that eventually you hear only the 'thud' of the hammer hitting the string and no...

Re: why is petrof not popluar ........?? in uk?
Yes, the higher end Petrofs are certainly better than they were, no doubt about that. Those larger models do have and always did have a sweet tone - it's just that the earlier models didn't have the best of build quality and the very small uprights were indeed 'budget' models. Nice to see the improv...

If it's F Dorner with the umlaut (") above the o it's made by Frederick Dorner & Sohn and serial no. is 4000 ish then it is a genuine maker from Stuttgart, made around 1880.

Re: notes go out of tune upwards
As Barrie and pintwister say, a little extra humidity can sharpen up the mid section. All pianos go sharp in the summer as indoor humidity levels rise. Strange though that this is happening at around 50% rh which is a very reasonable level. Is it a digital humidity gauge? If not, recalibrate it.

It probably wouldn't cost you any more to buy a 'Silent' piano than build and insulate a shed - a shed's not exactly the most pleasant and social environment in which to practise your Rach 3.
That way, you can play normal acoustic piano when the neighbours are out and go silent when they're in.

I haven't seen your previous post, so I'm unsure as to how old the piano is. New pianos can take a good 12/18 months to settle - and may need 3 monthly tuning in the first year.
