Re: Why POA?
You'd think a sensible thing for them to do, would be to keep the price high enough that it could only be discounted to a certain level, and then offer the lowest price through their own showroom in Wardour Street. However, I guess they may sell less pianos that way?

Hi! What kind of piano are you after? Are you after an overstrung piano with a modern type action? You may be better off looking for something a lot newer. Of course, if you are attracted to the sound of the old Bechstein uprights, then that is a different matter. The fact is that there are many new...

Re: Buying a piano on ebay/gumtree
Yeah, always when buying a piano, ask an expert. If you find a piano in private sale, take a tuner with you. You don't want to end up with a useless pile of junk that you've spent money on. Even if it's a famous brand, sometimes you have to be prepared to spend thousands on them to get them up to go...

Put it this way. I've played a couple of wonderful old pianos. There's an old Steck upright I know, which has candle sconces, and looks like it's from about 1890. well done, for a piano that is 100 years old and may need some heavy restoration, I think that's a good price. Old pianos are a lottery. I think Bostons are OK, actions are alright, sound is nothing to write home about. The ones I have played (including some PE) lacked sustain. Question about 7 foot grands
Almost every 7 foot grand I've played (or 6 ft 10) has had an odd sound in the tenor register, kind of tinny and suffering from poor sustain. I'm talking about pianos including Steinway B, Kawai RX6 and SK6, Bluthner Model 4, The ones that were OK, and had a decent sound were Yamaha C6/S6, and Bosen...

In that case, go for the Hoffmann. Schimmel is nice but overpriced, Hoffmann is nice but well priced. Less money to loose on it should you need to sell it ( I know that's not the reason to buy a piano but it's a factor).

Which piano did you go for in the end? I would have probably gone for the Kawai in this situation because I think they are a bit more meaty in tone, and I prefer a piano with a heavy touch. Re: How does Kawai CE220 compare with Yamaha CLP440
For the record, I use my Yamaha CP-300 for a great deal of heavy repetitive practice. The keyboard touch is heavy enough, and while it's not as smooth or as fast as my grand, that doesn't really matter given the work I'm doing on it. I enjoy practising on it, and I don't notice any difference in the...

I've played quite a few Iron Curtain ones. As long as the price is low it's OK. Some smaller grands have weaker tone than some larger uprights, that's true, but I think the W and L 178 should be fine for tone, people seem to love them.
