Wow, for me there would be no contest. I've never knowingly played a Bluthner but have a fear of pianos that old. Plus I have played some Schimmels and they were great pianos. I understand Schimmel to have a very good reputation in Europe so if you're getting a good price for this one - and it sound...

Can feel a purchase coming on...

Can anyone here recommend piano dealers in or near the Telford, Shrewsbury or Stafford area? My sister lives in that area and I think she's moving towards buying a piano... She has a pretty awful upright just now - she paid ?750 for it but I don't think it's worth that much. I don't know what make i...

I tried all the 3 pianos you mentioned and found the W&L 161 to have a better tone (mellower, more bass) and nice touch (more firm) than all of them. I also preferred the 161 to the 178, mainly due to the action. The 161 is certainly loud enough for my room which is about 5m * 7m but with very h...

I got my piano at De Lil et Fils in Brussels. http://www.goudengids-shopping.be/eshop/template/9/lang.asp?sid=11570&preview=&lngdns=all You can also try http://www.jspiano.be/ I searched Google with Wendl Lung Nederland and got a few hits including this one http://www.barning.com/page10.html...

Veletzky certainly looks Austrian and the story of W& L on the website appears believeable! http://www.wendl-lung.com/ He apparently designed the pianos, although it's likely only the 122 upright is entirely his design with the other models having Chinese input. He apparently does some quality c...

I bought my Wendl & Lung in Brussels - there are several dealers in Belgium who hold them - I know of shops in Gent, Brussels and Namur. The 161 is in a room roughly 5m * 8 m with hard floor but high ceilings and it is certainly not overpowering. Even with the lid slightly open (lowest setting) ...

I don't know anything about Hydroceel units but I do know about asbestos and I would be amazed if it was used in anything which was meant to absorb water, as generally it's not very absorbent.

My little Wendl & Lung 161 arrived today - what a wait! It looks much bigger in the house... but it looks very much at home. It was a bit of a risk buying a cheap chinese grand, and I'll just have to see how it goes, but so far I'm very pleased with it - nice rich tone, very smooth motion, and a...

So, bought my piano...

In the end it came down to a Schimmel 120I (which was right at the very top of my price range) and a Wendl & Lung 161 grand. The salesman in the shop with the Schimmel (try saying that after a couple of beers) was rubbishing any other make I mentioned I was interested in, other than those in his...

Well I'm still undecided about my new piano. Maybe I should rephrase my question: what are the pros and cons of a mid-height (116cm) upright Sauter/Schimmel/Pleyel vs a smallish (161 cm) grand Samick/Kawai/other?

Thanks

Thanks for your thoughts - I did try a Seiler but playing it and a Sauter side by side I found the Sauter preferable for tone and touch, and I even preferred the Schimmel to the Seiler, although that was in a different shop with very different acoustics. I just need to spend more time trying more pi...

Advice for piano purchase

Hello all, I'm in the market for a new piano, my old Ernst Kaps having finally got 'beyond economic repair.' I've seen a great Sauter 116cm and liked a Schimmel 116cm (wanted to try the 122cm but not in stock) however both these are slightly above my budget (I'd really want the taller Schimmel if it...
