Anyone know how much a BG 228 would cost? I'm currently agonizing over which piano to get for myself on a budget of around £11,000. I'm thinking the BG 228 is probably a hefty hike above that figure but I'd be interested to know. The obvious choice given my budget is the Yamaha C3 - I play one at a ...

I used T-Cut on some shallow scratches on our C7 and quite honestly it didn't make any difference that I could see. I also tried some of the Cori range of polishes and although they made the piano nice and shiny I didn't think it made much impact on even the smallest scratches. It's possible I was a...

I've been boring everybody senseless on the subject of celeste pedals in an earlier thread - what a fantastic chance to get back on the old hobby horse! I find them invaluable on the school pianos where I work because when the (rather hopefully named, in my opinion) 'celeste' pedal is engaged it is ...

How strange - I'd never think of buying one for school that didn't have that option. Oh well. Still, the Yamaha silent series sounds like a good option - what happens when you want to play duets in silent mode? I guess you could use a headphone splitter box to use two sets of headphones simultaneous...

Yes, I think I will actually end up going for one of the Yamaha silent series uprights. I'm not keen on getting extras fitted to the Schimmel because I think it costs plenty enough cash as it is and a celeste pedal should be a standard feature for any school instrument (I'm turning into a right old ...

Schimmel School Piano - a major problem!
I mentioned in an earlier thread that I was thinking of getting a Schimmel studio piano for school and I nearly did until today, when I noticed that it doesn't have a celeste pedal (if you haven't come across one before it's a middle pedal which brings material (felt?) in front of the strings and re...

It's infuriating. You buy a piano because you want to PLAY THINGS on it and then you can't actually PLAY THINGS on it because you spend most of the time FAFFING ABOUT with turning pages and sheet music/books falling all over the place  And another thing: Music trays. I use two Yamaha uprights ...

I'm working towards a performance diploma (in the same sense that a snail is working towards a 1-minute mile, but hey, you gotta have a dream, man) and I think I might finally be able to invest in a grand piano - provided that I don't eat for the next two years. Steinway - New York or Hamburg?
Hang on a minute; what's the difference between a Steinway piano made in Hamburg and one made in New York? Looking at the Steinway website I notice that they add numbers to the model letters to show that an instrument has been made in one place or another, so they clearly think the difference is wor...

How much should I expect to pay for a new Steinway Model B, or a recent secondhand one and who stocks them? I might be able to wangle it even at the over-budget cost. The Schimmel sounds like it would be best in our main music room and I would then move the Yamaha upright we've currently got there into the practice room. Thanks for the input, Fumbler. I looked at the Forsyth's site this morning and thought exactly the same thing about the Pegasus - I used to own an Eavestaff of a similar design and it was about as stable as a plane crash (sounded not unlike one, too).

I'm hoping to get the go-ahead to buy a new upright piano for a practice room in the school where I work. I reckon I might be able to spend up to £3000. Some of the keys on my (new) grand piano have begun making the kind of noise you get when a pencil has been dropped into the action and is happily bouncing around as the keys are used. Suspecting this to be the case, I shoved my big fat head under the bonnet BUT LO, there was not a single wri...

Care of polyester finish
We have a new Yamaha C7 at work and despite using a high quality protective cover the polyester finish shows up lots of little 'scratches' in certain areas (they aren't very deep at all - more like patterns of faint lines). Can these be polished out with anything? Presumably this is a common cosmeti...

Covering backs of uprights
I wanted to make the free-standing modern upright piano in my school music room less loud and was advised to cover the back with felt. In the event I found some of that material the boy racers use to cover speakers in cars. It's pretty thick (as indeed am I) but it seems to do the job. Is there anyt...

A friend of mine has a Bechstein upright, serial no.32597 which she wants to shift. I am looking for a set of those big brass castors with brakes which you fit to grand pianos so they can be moved around without carving channels into an expensive wooden floor. That's the absolute maximum! I want a grand I can use for teaching and practising - what do you recommend? I've been offered a new Yamaha C3 for just below 11,000 and I'm sorely tempted. I'm working towards then LRSM in the summer so I really want to spend the cash wisely!

We have a new Bluthner Model 4 grand in our school hall. A few players have commented on a lack of sustaining power and a weakish bass. I like the instrument though when I use it for choir accompaniment I often find myself having to 'play up' even with the lid open. I'd be interested to hear of your...
