Thomas Goodwin piano

Post by lpt100 »

Hi, i've been planning a concert in my local church and they have a piano bearing the name Thomas Goodwin, Manchester. I believe that as the piano has an overdammped system it is around 100 years old? And I've been told that in thoses times the piano dealer would put their name on the piano rather than the manufaturer. Could you give me more infomation about this? I'd be interested to know the maker of the piano if posible and any tips on revitalising the damper felts, which aren't pressing on the strings very well at all. What this all come down to really is whether to use this piano, which seems in tune, or to use an electric Roland borrowed from my school. I personally have a 94 Yamaha U1 and its great :P. Thanks
The pianoforte is to music what print is to poetry.

Goodwin or Godwin?

You have spelt it two different ways, which is right? Overdamper pianos were still made in London in the 1950s. The dampers are located very close to the top ends of the strings, and are always inefficient. As to its condition, you need an on-the-spot inspection by a tuner.

Thomas Goodwin was in Manchester from at least the early 1900s until the late 1920s, but disappeared from my lists by 1936. As for the aliases, type mokerard in your address bar.
