Date/Info on John Strohmenger & Sons London

Post by crystal_beth »

I have recently acquired a John Strohmenger and Sons London upright piano and am having trouble both dating the piano and finding out information on the history of the company, I know they started in 1835 and were and bought by Chappell.

My piano has the serial number 7920 and I think was made between 1900-1920 however am having trouble finding the exact date it was made.

If anyone has any information regarding dating the piano or any information about the company I would be eternally grateful.

Date/Info on John Strohmenger & Sons London

Joachim Strohmenger was established in 1835. By 1870 it was Strohmenger & Sons, and they became Ltd. around 1912. The references to "John" seem to date from the twenties onwards, yet the number suggests a date around 1902, so have a look at

1914 Strohmenger & Sons piano #13,400 has 3.4.14 written on the keys, and is also thought to have been a wedding present to the owner's parents in 1914.
