Its a bolt on leg, if you look at the pic from underneath you can see the bolts. If you keep the bolts tight you should get a couple of years out of it, then look for a Tozer or John Austin. 3 times the price but will last for ever and be nicer to use.

As far as I know its the same piano just some have the Samick mand and some the J reid name. Give Reids in tottenham a ring and they will be able to answer a questions you have.

I love the Yamaha U1 I just don't want to spend money on one that is badly re-conditioned. I suggest you buy a new piano then. The other problem to look out for is you can have a fantastic rebuild but the piano will still be stuck together with animal glue and ive lost count of the number of old pianos ive seen with glue joints in casework coming undone, expensive rebuild or not.

See if they have a smaller piano you like as well 108-112cm . If they are a decent dealer and you ARE going to buy one of them ask them to bring both and let you try for 10 mins each in the room.

Most of the time if they are going to break it will be during tuning and they tend to break near the tuning pin and shoot away from you towards the tail of the piano.

What are you spraying it with. I would guess anything else other than polyester will sink over time ( even polyester does over many years).

thanks everyone, i really appriciate the feedback. Every note struck, but i realise that isn't the major thing to worry about. You have to decide how long you want the stool to last. Much more than 2-3 years then buy a Tozer or John Austin. If only short term then go bolt on leg. They are cheap because they are c**p. Or go to your local auction and buy an old stool and refurb it yourself.

I think that if you trust your own tuner you should take his advice and his only as he can see the piano. Perhaps the public should buy a piano on the basis that is it worth the money being charged rather than ooohh its got 40% discount!!!! It would be interesting to see the prices people would pay for pianos if you put a large group of brands in a room with no prices or names on them.
