Welmar or Knight?

Post by Lilymaid » 30 Jul 2011, 19:00

We own a Knight upright piano - I think it is the smaller more basic model and that it dates from around 1968 (the number is 44851) though we purchased it secondhand and hardly used in the mid-80s. This piano is in good condition.
We've recently inherited a 1930s Welmar upright overstrung piano (number: 18629). This piano is in need of some renovation (the middle scales are pretty honky tonk now). Head says get rid of it, heart says that it has been in the family a long time and was generally well looked after - tuned regularly though probably kept in too hot a room. The tone of the Welmar is superior to that of the Knight (but the Knight isn't bad).
So what should I do ... and if I don't keep the Welmar will it just be chopped up for firewood? Would renovating the Welmar be a waste of money?
Any views appreciated! Thanks

Have you had the Welmar tuned the honky tonk bit may be lose tuning pins or just tuning and voicing. Both makes were good in their day Welmar tend to have a nice worm tone compared to the Knight

An on site inspection is needed to give you the full story

Get a good tech round to look at them both. You will know straight away. Asking the question on a forum cannot get you an answer.

Thanks for your replies. I've since been away on holiday and I'm still pondering what to do!
