What's my piano worth?

I am renovating a home and found an old upright piano left by the previous owners. I don't know much about pianos however I do know the following about the particular one I have:

William Knabe & Co
Gold Medal Pianos
Upright
Serial # 40268
Built in 1895

It is in fair condition

What might this Piano be worth?

Depends whether it's overstrung, straight strung, overdamped or underdamped. Also depends on its condition - 'fair condition' doesn't mean much, because I presume you're talking about the casework. That's not the instrument, it's the box the instrument comes in. Your best bet would be to call in a local tuner/tech who will have an idea of the local market, and therefore give you a far better idea of price than we can. S/he can also examine it and ascertain whether the wrest plank, soundboard and frame are undamaged, and see how worn the action is.

I reckon your piano is worth whatever you sell the sconces for on eBay, say, about 20 quid.
