Source of upright tuning mutes?

Post by Withindale »

Would anyone be kind enough to recommend a source of decent quality upright tuning mutes? There are plenty on Amazon and eBay but can a diy tuner do better from a piano supplies house?

Thank you.

The UK piano supply houses normally will not supply to non-trade.

What mutes are you looking for as most tuners in the UK use a Papp's Wedge for uprights if you are using an ETD then you are better with a muting strip. Unless it's an over-damper then a Papp's Wedge is the best wedge.

Yes, I am using an ETD on an underdamped piano. I was thinking of rubber wedges to get between the the notes in the treble but only because I have not used a Papps wedge. Maybe a muting striip would be better, and learn to tune the unsions by ear?

Thanks

ETDs are not great with unisons particularly in the bass where there's a lot of false overtones. You should also check your octaves with your ears to make sure that the stretch is correct for that piano, some ETD does tend to run sharp on older and smaller pianos.

If you do buy a paps wedge don't buy the blue ones they are made from plastic and don't last five minutes by the nylon ones there an off-white colour.

Thank you for the advice, Barrie. Have been distracted for the last few days.
