W.H. Barnes London

Post by Evy »

A few weeks ago I found an old piano standing in a second hand shop with a sign on it "practice piano". I was drawn to it and bought it as a furniture for my living room. Since this beautiful piano is in my house, I started to clean it. If dust would have the same value as gold, I would be a very rich lady now. I cleaned it in and outside, the keys, the hammers, the strings and replaced the felt under the keys.
The piano is the centre peace of my living room now. I know it is an old one, and probably not of any value.

Now I start to learn how to play the piano. It still needs to be tuned.

Since I wanted to know the history of my piano, I came to your website and found it very interesting. I was amazed about all you knowledge about piano's.
I hope you can tell me more about the period when it was made and W.H. Barnes. I have enclosed some pictures with ?serial? numbers for you and some pictures of the piano.
I really hope you can help me.

Hello Evy,
I agree that 10060 is likely to be the serial number of your piano but I haven't been able to find a list of numbers against date.

I hope the piano can be tuned and that it enables you to start piano lessons.

if you do a search on the site, there's been quite a lot written about Barnes https://www.piano-tuners.org/piano-foru ... w+H+Barnes
they were established in 1826,
Serial numbers beginning with 34 are early1930s later 1937 = 45860 according to Pierce.
If you can take out the bottom a key quite often the technician signed and dated it.

Thank you so much for you reply. It is a master piece of information you have.
I would also like to say “Thank You” to Bill Kibby for his e-mail.
Knowing that my piano is made around the twenties and still has a lovely sound, it is so precious to me.
Thank you.
