C. Bechstein piano

Post by lori72 »

I acquired this piano thru a friend trying to find some information on it about the age of it etc. The only numbers I can find on it is No:9523. and theres a number carved in 1876.. If anyone can tell me what those numbers mean would appreciate it.

Thanks

Is it possible that you could post pictures here to show what the whole piano look like or email them to me?

I am glad you have considered the idea that 1876 is a number, rather than a year, although in the 1860s, their numbers were also in the 1860s. Beware of statements on the internet about some Bechstein wrongly said to be very early.

The other number could be 1877, but I wouldn't depend on that, and there may well be other numbers somewhere. Any removable parts of the case may have numbers imprinted in them.

Also, if your tuner considers it safe to remove the action and look at the rear of it, there may be an action makers' name and number, and I may be able to date this.

Assuming an upright piano?

The following may be useful to trace the serial number; Bechstein uprights usually near location 3 .... rubber stamped in black ink.
