I must have gone to sleep for 40 years and awoke in a time when pianos are made differently ! Springs? Board? What on earth? Am I missing something? Back in my time this was bad regulation mostly due to the jack not having enough escapment and thus bouncing hammers on the jack. Solved easily by regu...

The actions( keys and action) are from Petrof, made by Detoa which are getting better but not as good as the Renner actions. Its interesting to know that by some, the Weinbach is classed as a medium quality piano ( about average) but not higher than say Kawai grand pianos, but at the end of the day,...

Turning the batt pins also increases wear in the bushings as less pin is in contact with the felt and you get grooves. The only answer is to replace the bushes. Its best to get these done by a local technician as they might need slight easing. Save some money and when the keys are away, polish the p...

Cracks in the wrest plank are only really to worry if they are deep cracks more than .5cm. As Barry says, its normally the top veneer which has cracked and its only decorative. If it holds tuning well, don't worry. If its ever re-pinned, you can have the top lightly sanded and varnished and also use...

I've condensed the grand action regulation and taken out a few I feel didn't need to be there for anyone who's interested. This is also based on roller type grand action. Measurments are roughly around whats usally used but each piano is different. Also samples would have been tested prior deciding o...

When changing the hammers, the technician should be able to get a close enough match and get them bored to pattern. Also check the weight of the hammers and shave bits off to match the original weight if needed. Change the strings, strings get brittle over time so a new set sound give the piano a bi...

Most electric pianos are built for home use, and stage pianos for stage use by using amplifiers etc. I have supplied Kawai digital pianos to some churches to replace either the piano or the organ which needs repairs. In both cases, the sound has been amplified. You can get a portable amplifier for n...

Some shops do not prep ( they don't have technicians) so they only get them checked when something goes wrong which is usally the hammers not resting properly and causing bad repetition. Some shops dont have time and relie on the importers to get it right. The one sure way to tell if a piano has bee...

Check centres and ease keys are important and i think this is where the problem is. I probably wouldnt go down the route of changing key weights, this is more with fine grand regulating and very rare to do unless new heavier/lighter hammers have been used. Teflon the butt leathers is also recommende...

Ive found Steinmayers a real pig to tune. They take a long time to settle, I sold one 3 years ago and its just starting to stop going out of tune in a big way. Now its just tidying up. The main points is that is dosn't change according to humidity, which rises and falls during the day. Over time wood will weaken as well as causing problems along the way. most cheap pianos have laminated soundboards, its cheap, and most people look at the case and the price tag. You dont see cheap Kawai pianos because they refuse to use thin laminated soundboards, but I guess ecconomics will win over. With regards to buying the right piano first, then I disagree. Mos...

The Kemble is only a small piano, 112cm i think and the Yamaha is 121cm so this will produce a better sound but it does depend on the age and quality of the Yamaha. The Steinmayers are good starters. For the money, good value and much better than a pub piano :) The only thing to watch out for is the regulation. mmm, interesting. As Barrie has said, you put a flat ruler end on the string and pull the string up so that it is level. The check is to lift the hammer up( you can make a simple tool so it is placed under the shank and you pull it up) so it touches the string and pluck the strings, they should soun...

If you are looking at new, which I think is the best value for money if you intend to keep it, then all new pianos are 7 1/4 octave anyway. Stay away from cheap Yamaha pianos as they are harsh sounding and cheaply built but if your budget dons't let you go higher then consider a secondhand piano. Ke...

The Irmler P118 is a very nice mellow tone and the K3 has a rounded Euro tone. The Samick WSU121 is nice and mellow but Samick use German hammers and they're German scaled so they tone nicely.
