I've only been tuning Steinways et al for 30 odd years so I can't really comment - except for the fact that I think Steinways are somewhat overrated.

I've tuned pianos where the pins are at the back, they're a doddle compared to the ones which have the wrestpins protruding beneath the sustaining pedal spring.

I'm sure that if a Bechstein grand can still sound dandy with whacking great chasms in the soundboard not to mention the trademark cracked frame, then the vibrations from a string aren't going to get too fussed about the kind of varnish used on the soundboard.

Unless it has a 'silent system' and sounds like a Kawaimaha XL5, the only advice you'll get on this forum is to use a sledge hammer.

I'd advise using a disc cutter, personally.
