Thanks Tom T, but I managed to knock one up out of 3 by 2. Cost me 40 quid, folds up, and even takes the weight of a monster Colon Broadwood - with just a few creaks and groans from both the wood and myself. It's broadly based on this except with more triangulation at the pivot point, steel instead ...

I mean, of course, those devices that tilt an upright onto it's back for easy castor/restringing jobs etc. Do any of you lot have an image of one? Preferably one in use. Either the folding type or one of those wood/steel fixed jobs (the type that look like a cross between a sleigh and a market barro...

Re: Open or Closed
On balance I would prefer open forums, but allowing the general public to see what some Tuner/Technicians get up to in this trade, perhaps they should be closed. In the last few weeks we have seen the following being advocated. Ear wax & sweat. Home made wrest plank restorer applied from a genu...

The wedge was a tad too wide, hence (careful!!!) use of screwdriver. As a church organist myself I don't take liberties! :) Cardboard, as in a folded business card or, indeed, a flattened roach, might go down better if seen by the 'wrong' people'. It might make the keyboard stink of fish a bit, but...

Cleaning action components
Prior to working on customers' actions, I use compressed air to remove the crud, but when doing one up to sell, use the shot-blaster. Am I to be frowned upon by the 'traditionalists' for doing this? I use kiln dried sand - the sort used for dressing block paving, cheap and plentiful and fine enough ...

I'm not enthralled at paying 500+ squids for a downloadable progam, so... Is there an accurate machine out there for, say, 200 quid? One that 'stretches' the octaves a tad - like what I does. Can these overpriced progam versions be copied? ....you know what I mean? You know what I'm after. I'...

I can't believe that tuners could falsen* a string by their 100 or so visits/Papps-clicks when they get a good hammering anyway, in normal use. I take your point on the slightly longer string but I was more on about the (lack of) purity of that single string as opposed to the 'out-of-tuneness' of it...

Tuning trichords
Whilst doing the trichords, even when laying the scale, I always tune the right hand string first because I tend to find that they are purer in tone than the left hand string. Oddly enough, I found out that my old man used to do the same too! So...... why are the (usually) left hand strings falser t...

I assumed that the core could be powered at one end like a lathe (but by the drill) and the other hooked onto freely rotating eye/hook thingy but it's the necessary tension that I need info on. There's a short vid clip on http://www.hellerbass.de/uk/entrance.htm but sadly, it's not that informative.

How feasible is it to make your own machine? I've seen a picture of a home-made winding 'machine' using a variable speed electric drill to rotate the core wire but does anyone know how tense the core needs to be prior to applying the copper wire? Any info and/or images of home-made devices would be ...

De-oiling action
Years ago, as a young'un, I used to amuse myself by doing things like pouring mercury from one hand to the other as my old man - a tuner/repairer, using Benzine or Carbon Tetrachloride in which to rinse the crud from oily flanges prior to recentring - all whilst he smoked a Capstan in an asbestos ci...
