The wedge was a tad too wide, hence (careful!!!) use of screwdriver. As a church organist myself I don't take liberties! :) Cardboard, as in a folded business card or, indeed, a flattened roach, might go down better if seen by the 'wrong' people'. Prior to working on customers' actions, I use compressed air to remove the crud, but when doing one up to sell, use the shot-blaster. Am I to be frowned upon by the 'traditionalists' for doing this? According to my 'Pierce Piano Atlas', your Erard was made in 1838 (assuming that your serial number is correct).

Erards made in the 1870's started with serial number 43***.

A bit of advice....


Look after the thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, unisons and octaves, and the tenths'll look after themselves.

Also, if in doubt, sharpen it. :wink:

I can't believe that tuners could falsen* a string by their 100 or so visits/Papps-clicks when they get a good hammering anyway, in normal use. I take your point on the slightly longer string but I was more on about the (lack of) purity of that single string as opposed to the 'out-of-tuneness' of it...

I assumed that the core could be powered at one end like a lathe (but by the drill) and the other hooked onto freely rotating eye/hook thingy but it's the necessary tension that I need info on. There's a short vid clip on http://www.hellerbass.de/uk/entrance.htm but sadly, it's not that informative.
