The price is not unusual.

The temperature variations are the maximum. Typically between 17-18 to 23 on a daily basis. It is a well insulated cocoon of a house. The notes going out of tune are really all over the keyboard, there is no one area worse than others. The 2nd tuner asked before he came if alternate notes were out o...

The room it is in varies in temp between 15-25'C and humidity varies between 45-60%. Whilst trying to establish why it drifts out of tune three suggestions have been made by techs, given that the tuning pins are ok. 1. The hammers are worn so you have multiple points of contact between the strings a...

I had a look on the Abel web site and according to their info the hammers on a Grotrian upright are 65/75 bass/treble. I measured mine and they are 62.3/70.3 or thereabouts allowing for string imprints. So is that wear excessive, 5mm would seem a lot in the treble but how about the bass of say 2.5-3...

Upright rebuild or partial job?
My 1924 Grotrian Streinweg was going out of tune within a week of it being tuned last wek so I thought the maybe the tuning pins are loose. When I bought it, it was out of tune to the extent that it was unplayable. I had it tuned first last November, and again before Easter. So it will probably take...

I think I remember the name from an advert G and R removals placed in the piano auctions catalogue I received. Lauding their skills and experience in moving pianos. If you click on the picture icon of the BBC site there are 4 pics showing how they managed it. It looks as if they did not have enough ...

I would have it looked at by a tuner before doing anything to the case in case its a duffer. I read your previous post and it makes me wonder why the tuner did not want it, lack of space perhaps or did he know something you don't? 50:50 mix of white spirit and Linseed oil removes the dirt and dust t...

Insurance valuations
I am slowly restoring the case on a 1924 upright Grotrian Steinweg, the keys need cleaning also, but the action is very good. My tuner reckons to buy a new piano of equivalent quality would cost £15k. I have seen similar ones on shop web sites for between £3.5 and £6k. So for insurance purposes how ...

Spray or French Polish restoration?
For a 1924 upright Grotrian Steinweg. One end panel needs to be stripped and repolished and the top and the other end taken back a way. A fair bit of work is needed but the panels above and below the desk are pretty good only surface crazing. how does the spray finish compare to the French Polish fo...

Thanks Barrie. I cleaned this piano with a vacuum cleaner on the inside firstly then a cloth and water. I took all the keys out and cleaned under them, I also took the gauze rear off and cleaned the back out of all the black dirt. The outer case with a dishcloth and water. It takes time but worthwhi...

Nicotine removal and key cleaning
I bought a 1924 Grot(ty)rian Steinweg upright which was absolutley fithly when I bought it. I cleaned off the dark yellow stain from the case as much as I could, nicotine I assume, but on the key cover it seems to have formed into a hardened surface finish, like an old polish which is breaking up, t...

I am thinking of buying one of these. Made in 1971-3. They are only a little bit smaller than the K10, so what differences are there. And are there any pitfalls to watch for? Not been tuned for 10 years

I would find a local tuner to come and inspect. Find out which model it is (http://www.courtneypianos.co.uk/)
Tuner would give a value. A tuned piano gets a better price.

Adjustable stool
I am after an adjustable stool to use on a Chappell upright. It needs to be high, best part of 2 foot. I am looking on the net for brands or getting one secondhand. I am not too impressed with ones that can be dismantled. I don't want to spend more than Ł150, Ł30 to Ł50 if poss.

Chappell 1920-30 upright models
I have two, one from 1920, the other from 1930. I saw an advert or a Chappell diamond, saying it was the best upright going. http://www.pianostreet.co.uk/pianos/details.php?pd=841&send=1 so I wondered what it was and what made it different from std upright X strung under damped ones as I have. S...
