The temperature variations are the maximum. Typically between 17-18 to 23 on a daily basis. It is a well insulated cocoon of a house. The notes going out of tune are really all over the keyboard, there is no one area worse than others. The 2nd tuner asked before he came if alternate notes were out o...

The room it is in varies in temp between 15-25'C and humidity varies between 45-60%. Whilst trying to establish why it drifts out of tune three suggestions have been made by techs, given that the tuning pins are ok. 1. The hammers are worn so you have multiple points of contact between the strings a...

I had a look on the Abel web site and according to their info the hammers on a Grotrian upright are 65/75 bass/treble. I measured mine and they are 62.3/70.3 or thereabouts allowing for string imprints. So is that wear excessive, 5mm would seem a lot in the treble but how about the bass of say 2.5-3...

Upright rebuild or partial job?

My 1924 Grotrian Streinweg was going out of tune within a week of it being tuned last wek so I thought the maybe the tuning pins are loose. When I bought it, it was out of tune to the extent that it was unplayable. I had it tuned first last November, and again before Easter. So it will probably take...

The total value of the items sold was £345k
Averaging 15% commission from sellers and 15% from the buyers the auctioneers earned £120k.

I would have it looked at by a tuner before doing anything to the case in case its a duffer. I read your previous post and it makes me wonder why the tuner did not want it, lack of space perhaps or did he know something you don't? 50:50 mix of white spirit and Linseed oil removes the dirt and dust t...

Insurance valuations

I am slowly restoring the case on a 1924 upright Grotrian Steinweg, the keys need cleaning also, but the action is very good. My tuner reckons to buy a new piano of equivalent quality would cost £15k. I have seen similar ones on shop web sites for between £3.5 and £6k. So for insurance purposes how ...

For a 1924 upright Grotrian Steinweg. One end panel needs to be stripped and repolished and the top and the other end taken back a way. I recently bought a Grotrian upright. It is much heavier than my Chappell upright. So try lifting one end of it and if you can then its English, if you can't then its a Kraut. The rear has a gauze covering, if you remove that and its wooden frame by unscrewing the screws, you will see a 4"x4&qu...

I bought a 1924 Grot(ty)rian Steinweg upright which was absolutley fithly when I bought it. I am after an adjustable stool to use on a Chappell upright. It needs to be high, best part of 2 foot. I am looking on the net for brands or getting one secondhand. I am not too impressed with ones that can be dismantled. I don't want to spend more than Ł150, Ł30 to Ł50 if poss.
