I wouldn't dream of using WD40 on a customers piano. Apart from anything else, it is an easing oil NOT a lubricant! Oh, and it is brilliant for removing the residue from sticky labels :)

American tuners won't touch them because they can't tune them with Electronic Tuning Devices which are far more common there than they are here. They use felt strip mutes for the whole instrument, tune using the ETD then put in the unisons at the end. Rather difficult with an overdamper :)

Can I offer another solution to the sight-reading problem? Give up doing exams! Continue with piano lessons which you enjoy, just cut out the stressful bits like sight -reading infront of a complete stranger. Scales etc are good for technique and for aural training which in the end will help you to ...

Personally, I think that Bach's Prelude in C is easier than Fur Elise. There are a couple of Beethoven Bagatelles which are also much more beginner friendly.

Dave http://www.8notes.com is well worth a visit. The free sheet music is graded into Easy, Medium and Hard and there is quite a varied selection of Easy pieces for piano. Alternatively, if there is a sheet music section in your local library (in Edinburgh, the main city library has music/scores etc...

Fill a mug 3/4 full with boiling water.
Add a couple of teaspoons of honey.
Add a couple of teaspoons of lemon juice (or orange if you prefer)
Find the whisky bottle and add a generous measure to the above.
The hot toddy is now at just the right temperature to drink.

If you want in inexpensive tuning program try TuneLab (just Google it). The download does cost but should work out at well under 200 pounds. You can also download a trial version before you commit your hard-earned pennies.

In my day it was called transcribing and involved sitting for hours at a reel-to-reel tape recorder with manuscript and pencil in hand. My only consolation was that it was great practice for the aural tests which used to be part of the Higher Music Examination.
