The Broadwood Barless Grands where in my opinion the best British grand pianos ever built and should be appreciated more,best of luck.Re-conditioned a good few over the years and was never disappointed and as "Gill" stated their tuning stability was ahead of its time,also liked the tone they produced.

Thanks Chris for upto date info,do Yamaha not own the Pearl River Factory ?.Just back from a week break in Cyprus and the hotel had a Ritmuller player grand which was was a carbon copy of a GB1 internally,cabinet had different design features and was only 4 years old.

Ritmuller and B-series Yamahas are made in same factory using nearly all the same components Yamaha would be my choice,expand your search and try Kawai pianos,Essex Pianos and other brand names you may have heard of.Keep clear of badge engineered instruments which have grand sounding European names ...

Used Steinway grand in good condition,if you got 25k and more,should not be a problem,stay away from old instruments which have had plank and soundboard replacements and have been reconded in China and Eastern Europe.

i know of 2 well respected piano tutors who where virtually given the grand piano for free to try promote the brand to their pupils,smart ploy not really as the students where of conservertoire standard.and the 2 techs where kept busy attending to the niggles that a low quality grand piano produces...

Piano Sexism,have heard it all now can hardly believe my ears especially on Yamaha pianos,cute,romantic,sweet etc,my description of these instruments are practise pianos,workhorses at give-away prices.If after sweet,melodic tones stay clear.

Used to stock them their 130cm upright was in a class of it own as where their grand pianos,but as Joseph rightly comments outpriced themselves,think they are still producing some pianos in Germany,and probably have a production line in a factory in China.

Never had any problems with them even with a U3 or Steinway Vertegrand with the frame protruding by the plinth,when you have been moving and delivering pianos for the best part of 30 years kinda get used to it.Like the blow- up wheels trolley for going over gravel and stone driveways, :wink:

Sound Instruments,remember them well tried to buy up all the old Steinway,Bechstein,Bluthner,Bosendorfer etc at silly prices,they would buy instruments via the U.K.auction house network,and had musicians buying pianos for them who where trombone players,you could make good money from your German jun...

My advice when buying used Yamahas from Far-East get the pianos which at most require an action overhaul,and possible bass section restring,often find when buying direct instruments are half-tone flat from concert pitch you can cut out the wholesalers and go direct SUSSEX and you would be pleasantly...

I am a bit confused. The stop bar replaces the celest rail? And how does the system recieve the info on key and speed? Yamaha GA1 grands tend to go out of tune easily thats why it was replaced by the GB1,the hammers are so hard its needs a magician to be able to tone them,£3900 was probably what they paid for it 10years ago,would wait a while and try get a used C1 different league in the quality stakes.

About 20 years ago there was a classical pianist who toured with a set of Steinway key lead weights and after tuning Steinway Model D if he was not happy with the feel of piano would ask if you could re-weight the keyboard 15 minutes before his performane :x

Kawai K3 is better value as the Yamaha U1 is almost 2k more at the proper retail prices,if price is not a factor would buy the Yamaha,other makes to consider are Essex 123 and Boston 118 and 126 models and Zinnermans would go and try as many pianos as possible,whats the budget?.
