The Eleventh Hour...!

Happy Birthday Barrie. If i distinctly remember having read previous posts on here that you were born on the 11th of November which is the 11th month (at ironically the 11th hour). I just hope what with it being 11/11/11 today that you didnt self implode or get struck by lightening or anything at 11...

Re: What’s your biggest problem with practicing piano?

I think my problem is i just like to play things through once from start to finish and not go over specific sections/repeating them etc. I suppose technically this isnt practicing but just faffing around but i want all the glory without the 'hard work'. I just find going over the same section over a...

Re: Too Self Conscious

Hi Fallada I think its perfectly normal, or at least not all that uncommon, for someone to feel self conscious about playing in a shop full of strangers. Not everyone is at the same level but that doesnt mean anyone is any less entitled to play piano or test out a particularly nice piano. If its any...

Re: Bosendorfer 130CL vintage 1920s model

The keyboard can come off?!? Well i didnt know that. Could be an option. Thought the wood was all one piece. Not sure which end is the gable end. Maybe on its side you mean? So then perhaps it could be angled in? Not sure really. Even at an angle its still got to go through the front door (!). The p...

Re: Playing from memory...To be or not to be?

Well i guess the 'ology' in musicology says it all as i like to think of Music as art and not Science. Science can be a bit cold and clinical. I like the analogy though. Remember someone saying something similar in that you can look close up to a painting and analyse the brush strokes/ detail of it ...

Re: Bosendorfer 130CL vintage 1920s model

Well the only problem is having bought it recently it was such a big old thing (the depth that is) that the movers couldnt get it past the porch door. Its currently sitting in storage which is a bit criminal really until i can work out what to do with it. May look to get the door frame widened someh...

Re: Playing from memory...To be or not to be?

Its true. I like to just listen and enjoy the music rather than breaking it down into some sort of algorhythmic (see what i did there?!) pattern of notes and chords. I was just hoping an accomplished memoriser on here would be able to bring me round to the virtues of learning from memory or whether ...

Re: Playing from memory...To be or not to be?

Hi PianoLove...(i love piano too!) Well to be honest i dont play by ear at all and have always relied on the music to play. I play classical music mainly which is not always easy to pick up by ear unless your of the autistic savant capacity! But your right about analysing and looking at chord struct...

Re: Playing from memory...To be or not to be?

Wow Colin your well qualified. A diploma level piano teacher and piano technician. I thought you could only be good at one of those! Well i was born in the early eighties so i guess there is still hope if i want to be like all those superstar pianists and play without the score. But aside from a per...

Re: Yamaha P114

It's true the Japanese like to buy new. That's because new is better and new Yamaha pianos are superior to old ones. The Japanese customer with the 35 year old U1 or U3 could still keep the piano and have it restored. They choose not to because when restored it still won't sound as good as the new ...

Re: Playing from memory...To be or not to be?

Well i have only recently been experimenting with playing from memory but still cant make up my mind if im sold by it or not. Its definately different. Personally i find i can get lost in the music more by having it all there in front of me. Its almost like having a safety blanket and so therefore e...

Re: Bosendorfer 130CL vintage 1920s model

Thanks. I had a look. The 130CL is actually an upright and i believe the one in the auction is a grand. Seems a bit suspect at that price anyway! Surely worth more than the guide price if its half decent. Maybe it has one of those 'unforgiving' viennese actions. Otherwise there are some tasty lookin...

Playing from memory...To be or not to be?

So the big question is as a piano player of a significant number of years but with with a memory like a sieve, is it really worth all the hard work to commit a piece to memory? Obviously it seems a necessity for public performance and all the most accomplished pianists play from memory. But while it...

Bosendorfer 130CL vintage 1920s model

Hi. Im a new poster on here and general piano enthusiast. So my question is has anyone had any experience with this model in particular as there dont seem to be many around? (is that with good reason?!?). Anything positive? The recent models are at the high end of the market but how do the older one...

Re: Garden practise shed

Hi all Depending on your budget you can a get very fancy shed which is more like a log cabin. I viewed a piano at a guys house once and it was in an outbuilding in his garden which was basically a giant shed. Inside it was well furnished with carpet, sofas, electrical supply for a TV etc. He told me...
