Looking for a stage piano

Hi I have a Yamaha U3 acoustic piano, but because the music room is right below the nursery, it's off-limits after 7pm. Which isn't good as I don't get home until 6.45 during the week! So I am looking for a stage piano to supplement it. The most important features are the action (it must be as close...

I played Kawai upright that was about 110-120cm this morning, and it was appalling. I would avoid it like the plague, it was woolly and vague.

The U1 will be a fabulous piano for you.

Maintenance for our 2 year old piano

Our piano will be 2 years old this September. Since we're moving house soon, it seems an ideal time to get any maintenance done. Any recommendations other than a thorough tune?

Interesting.

How can I get it adjusted? I have a feeling that our usual tuners wouldn't be up to the task.

Silent systems not all they're cracked up to be

Unless you're pushed for space, I would recommend buying a separate digital piano rather than going for a "silent" acoustic. I own a Yamaha U3 silent, which is about 2 years old. The action on it, even when the silent system is disengaged, is heavier than any other Yamaha I've played (anot...

I had a look at the Guildhall syllabus and they seem to focus quite closely on scales, and the different ways in which they can be played (piano/forte, legato/staccato). There also seems to be a wider range of pieces that can be chosen at each grade, although I don't know how good these pieces are.

Pushkin, I would highly highly recommend Craig Ewens. He is based in Belsize Park and is an extremely talented pianist. He's a patient teacher, and specialises in teaching adults (like you and I). He has been teaching me for around six months, and my girlfriend for about two months. Here are his det...

The best thing that you can learn on is a half-decent upright piano. "Touch-sensitive" keys are a misnomer, as they will be nothing like a proper piano action. You should be able to get to Associated Board Grade 2 on the DGX200, AB Grade 4/5 on a digital piano (Yamaha Clavinova, Roland HP-...

Barrie, excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by the "scaling" being better?

I bought a Roland HP-2E a year ago and whilst it is fine for beginners, I find the action to be quite poor. It's very light, although at the same time quite sticky so playing fast passages can be very difficult/impossible. The pedal is a simple "on/off" switch, so half-pedalling isn't poss...

Sight-reading in Associated Board exams

As much as I *hate* the sight-reading part of exams, I think it's a vital skill and that it should be examined. Learning the set pieces and playing them from memory is (for me, at least) trivial.
