Dlores da Costa BMUS, PGCE

Personal Description: I am a passionate and keen musician and began classical piano and vocal lessons from the age of five and continue to explore these instruments to the present today. As a solo and ensemble performer I have had the opportunity to work around the world and thus gathered a broad range of musical works from traveling that I frequently integrate into my teaching. I studied composition for four years in the U.K and U.S.A and specialise in 20th century film and compositional techniques.
I am friendly, patient with a good sense of humour. I am a motivating teacher with high expectations from my tutees and strongly believe in the philosophy ''that everyone is musical''.

Tutoring Experience: I am currently a practicing secondary school teacher and private tutor with an extensive background of teaching music in nursery and primary schools. I teach all ages, and have had intensive training and experience teaching music to children and adults with special needs particularly those with dyslexia and autism.

Tutoring Approach: My music lessons seek to combine the main elements that are found in music which are performance, composition, history and theory to ensure that all my tutees strive to become excellent musicians. These are integrated into all lessons whether you wish to take associated board examinations or simply learn for fun. A few of the skills you will develop are sight reading skills, the ability to play pieces musically and the ability to write music/ song write.
The main aim of every lesson is to make learning fun by working closely through your interests i.e. particular pieces/ songs or style, and finding teaching styles that work best for you to excel in your learning. During each lesson I will take notes on key points from the lesson and together we will decide and agree on small goals to achieve for the next lesson. If you find you have problems in between lessons with set work I am more than happy for you to ring me for help.
I also organise optional small concerts so that you become familiar and comfortable with performing to audiences; which is a very important in music and often overlooked by many teachers. I will also encourage you to play your own simple written music, accompany other tutees and in doing so is also a great way to make new friends with like minded people.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in contact by phone or email.
