Time to learn Piano MA (Cantab) PGCE EYPS

I have been teaching children and adults for many years and now teach piano and musicianship full time. I studied music at Cambridge University and also have teachers training qualifications for ages 0-11 and much experience of teaching older children and adults! I believe that it's always a good time to learn piano whether you're 7 or 70 (or considerably older!) I offer group lessons if you and a friend wish to learn together (this works well for both adults and children) as well as traditional 1 to 1 style.

I use ABRSM, Trinity and LCM for those who wish to take exams, (my results are very good- all merits and distinctions so far!) and for children, often import a method from USA which is not available here, which I have found to be the most successful way of teaching 7-10 year olds. (I am in e-mail correspondence with the authors and we compare notes on pedagogic practice!)

I believe that you need to understand music to play it, so theory and aural are incorporated into lessons, and I use Australian and other theory methods to reinforce learning. We talk about history of music as well, so that for instance it isn't a surprise when for Grade 5 aural the student needs to know about classical, baroque and romantic stylistic characteristics.

I aim to ensure my students have fun, but they have to commit to regular practice (for beginners it only need be 3-5 minutes a day!) (I don't take children on unless THEY want to learn, not their family!) and their musicality will develop as well as their understanding of music styles. I encourage students to improvise, to compose and to experiment- so my lessons are not particularly traditional, especially in the early stages.

Please note I live up a narrow bumpy lane outside Stroud!
