Mark Stawman

Mark Stawman MMus Performance, BA (Hons) Music Studies, ABRSM Grade VIII Piano.

Whether you want to play for pleasure or take more formal grades I am able to provide tailored lessons designed to meet the needs of the student. I offer tuition to both children and adults of all ages, from beginners to grade 8 and diploma level.

The most important part in the musical education of any instrumentalist is the initial stage. With beginners especially, it is all too common for some teachers to rush through pieces and for students to quickly develop bad habits and unreliable reading skills. Later down the line this can cause frustration and ultimately the adult or child terminates lessons. I believe that all students are entitled to a thorough and well-rounded musical education and that these areas should be exploited from the very first lesson. By using fun exercises and exploring the key musical features of pieces studied, I ensure that all students feel confident with both their technique and note-reading abilities before proceeding to more advanced works.

I strongly believe that anybody has the ability to play the piano and that their technique and musicality is developed through good quality practice and having love for each note they produce. It doesn't necessary require hours of practice, but instead, the commitment to listen intently and be focussed in their studies.

All piano lessons are given on a brand-new grand piano, in a dedicated music room. At the end of the academic year I provide a progress report to all students offering a holistic view of pupils’ progress and achievements; I find this particularly useful for the parents or guardians of students receiving tuition.

It is essential that students feel relaxed with both their teacher and environment before commiting to lessons. I therefore find out the goals and aims of individuals in the first lesson and ensure they happy to embark on a lifetime of enjoyment achieved through music.

I am able to enter students for ABRSM piano exams if desired, and always receive excellent results. Although exams provide a useful goal and a great sense of achievement, participation is completely voluntary. As a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians I conduct lessons in a friendly, yet professional manner and in accordance with their codes and ethics. This ensures that I deliver a quality service to you, as the customer.
