Douglas Gould M.Mus. B.Mus(Hons) LRAM ARCM PGCE (Advanced Skills Teacher)

Doug is an award-winning classical and jazz pianist as well as a highly experienced and innovative teacher. He studied with some of the most eminent world-class musicians at the Royal College of Music, having passed Grade 8 at the age of 14 with a high distinction. It is possible to trace his musical line back through several generations to Brahms and even Mozart!

Age is no barrier to achievement in his lessons (current students range from 4- 62). He is happy to teach any standard - from beginner through to professional in any style, including Blues, Rock and Pop.
Doug is very interested in the way people learn and has developed a new highly original teaching style, concentrating on the physical/kinaesthetic side of playing to start with and developing a good ear and technique. As a result of this, students seem to make rapid progress - many are already at A-level standard of performance by about 12 years old, for example.

A large number of his students have been successful in gaining places at top conservatoires of music in London, or at prestigious music schools such as Chethams , as well as gaining music and performing arts scholarships to more local schools

Doug is a teacher with passion for his vocation, which he tries to instil in all his students.

He encourages a broad, open-minded approach to music-making: for example,
two of his ex-students have separately secured recording contracts with major labels in the past two years.
Doug has also applied his unique approach to the teaching of singing (X-Factor!), clarinet and electronic keyboards.
He frequently works as a vocal coach and accompanist to West End singers and can give invaluable help.
He also offers theory lessons to all levels, GCSE music guidance ( he is a senior examiner for a major board) and can tutor A-level and degree students in all aspects of the subject.
The emphasis in his lessons is on motivation and enjoyment.

Doug also specialises in helping those of you traumatised by your youthful experiences of piano lessons! He can offer something quite different to that!

Bournemouth Music Festival 2011 Congratulations to Bryan Crook for winning Pianist of the Year, with Ben Cross coming second! Bryan has also been awarded a place on the internationally renowned jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music

Here is how one world-level jazz musician reviewed Doug's recordings recently:

"Doug Gould's impressive and ever-evolving solo piano conceptions are a thrill to hear! Drawing from a deep understanding of jazz and classical genres, Gould evidently enjoys surprising and delighting his audience with unique treatments of standards and originalsl" Miles Black

Inspirational Teacher

My daughter has studied piano with Doug for 10months, during which time he has moved her from below grade 1 to grade 5 level. He teaches in a holsistic way - by that I don't mean that he is some hippy alternative dude, but that he takes the...

Doug has been my piano teacher for about 3 years now, for which I am most grateful. I never know quite what to expect from my next lesson, which is a good motivation to practise hard and keep an open mind about what I am learning, this makes every...

I have been a pupil of Doug's for the past 11 or so years.
When I first starting playing the piano at a young age(with another teacher) I learnt to play by ear so I've grown up playing without being able to read music.
He is a really...
