I teach both adults and children to play jazz, pop and rock piano. I also teach formal classical up to grade 5. My lessons will enable you to play and improvise on jazz standards and popular songs, interpret chord charts and provide better piano accompaniment. I also tutor song writing and composition.

We will learn practical theory that will enable you to find your own playing style and to start sounding like a professional in no time. You can only get so far playing alone with teach-yourself jazz piano books, working alongside a jazz piano teacher will give you that essential practical experience.

My lessons are planned around the needs of the individual student and take into account not only where they are, but the style of music they wish to develop.

Generally, we’ll play the popular songs and standards you love whilst learning the following theory and concepts.

• Scales, Intervals & Triads
• Modes, II-V-I
• The ‘cycle of fifths’
• 12 Bar blues
• Three note voicing spread over 2 hands
• Diminished & Suspended chords
• Adding to the three note voicing
• Scales theory and using scales in jazz
• Pentatonic scales
• Chord & Tri-tone substitution
• Improvisation

I teach both adults and children and we can work at your home if you'd rather. If choosing to study at my home, I am based in Berkhamsted and my home studio is an informal and relaxed environment and use a lovely Yamaha upright as well as my keyboards (Roland RD & Korg Triton). I also use my PC based studio and backing tracks to enhance learning where appropriate.

A batch of 4 one hour long lessons is £120 (ie. £30 per hour). This is payable in advance after an initial introductory lesson (also £30). The dates and frequency are up to you but I suggest getting 4 sessions in the diary in advance to avoid losing your preferred day and time slot. Individual stand alone lessons are £35 per hour. 45 minute and 30 minute lessons are also available.

I am enhanced CRB cleared and have plenty of good local references available.
