BackgroundWe are a family business that has been servicing musical instruments and attending to the requirements of musicians great and small since 1825. Our head tuner/technician served an apprenticeship with Monington and Weston, one of the last piano factories to survive in Britain.

Basic rules of thumbWe assume you are interested in pianos, possibly know a bit about them, but are apprehensive about choosing one. Our family has been piano dealing and servicing for approximately 175 years, both in England and Scotland, during which time we have assembled quite a knowledge of the instrument and hope the following will be of assistance.

Only buy a piano which has a full iron frame, is overstrung, underdamped and tuned to British Standard Pitch ("Concert Pitch"). This means that whatever its age it shares all the features of a brand new piano and will tend to cope with modern living conditions. All our instruments fulfil these criteria. This short note cannot describe all these features in detail, as that would fill a small book. If in doubt, obviously consult experts - such as us !

For a pre-war instrument expect to pay £500 upwards: for a modern style, 20-30 years old, pay about £1000: for the cheapest new quality upright piano, about £1800 upwards.

Naturally, these are gross generalisations to be qualified by condition and maker etc.
All our second-hand pianos are carefully chosen, checked, and overhauled as necessary in our own workshop by the proprietor, who is a time-served tuner/technician. New pianos are dismantled and given a fine regulation and tuning before we sell them on. These operations are very labour intensive and generally are not allocated the necessary time to achieve perfection in factory regimes.
