Erard London ivories

Post by Colin Nicholson »

Hi guys,
I recently visited an Erard London semi-concert grand, and we are hopefully starting the shipping process very soon from Italy to UK.
The piano is to undergo a 3/4 restoration, (excluding a full French Polish), and the ivories are still in excellent condition.
The piano is dated 1860.
The client lives in the USA, and the piano will be shipped out there in a few months time.

A few concerns have arisen about an "ivory ban" ?? .... and if the piano would be allowed in the USA with ivories.
I realise that the ivories could be replaced for a plastic version key top (ivory colour)
Does anyone have any information about shipping ivory to the USA? (or other countries)
Appreciate any feedback

You have to prove the ivory is before 1936 if after you have to prove its origins a DNA test is the best way.
However, if the ivory is coming off in the US I would remove before shipping to save you the aggravation.

I would give the US embassy a call first as the rules are changing

Thanks Barrie.
I didn't know a DNA test could detect the age of ivory. Well its definitely before 1936! (see pic).
The piano has been purchased (50% just now + shipping fees), and we are all trusting the Italians to a safe delivery....
Once the piano arrives here, I can assess the ivory issue later. Cheers......
