Estonia Piano redesigns tone ~ speaking with Dr. Indrek Laul

Post by gbmc »

Hey everyone. This month on Piano Price Point I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Indrek Laul from Estonia Piano. If you haven't played one of their instruments you should consider giving them a try. They're hand made instruments built in the country of Estonia and beautifully made. You can read the article about billionaire Larry Ellison (Oracle) and the comparison to piano design in this month's article. Enjoy

I don't think they're currently sold in the UK Ian. They have in the past been imported by the Edinburgh Piano Company, and Alan Makin Pianos also in Edinburgh, and Biggars music in Glasgow.

Even in the late 1990s there were some pretty nice sounding Estonias coming out, but it's been a very long time since I've played on one, and I've never played anything other than a very small grand. I don't know why they're not available here - I guess it's probably the popularity of the two main Japanese brands, and the fact that the market here is probably much smaller for grands than it is in other countries (correct me if I'm wrong though).

Yes, Joe, I thought that was the case. The best plan is to jump on Easyjet or Ruanair to Tallinn. Glen's article is interesting, particularly the Estonian piano builders harking back to the sound and design of older pianos.

BTW, no problem opening the link in my Chrome browser.

keep an eye on Conway Hall piano auctions (Holborn/ London)... my colleague bought a concert Estonia back in 2012 & shipped to Oz with other grands. When I went over later that year, I was very impressed with the tone/ action.... and spent most of my time tinkering on it, despite a couple of Steinway A models aside to it.
