Joshua Marshall piano

I have an upright piano, the name plate says "Selected by Joshua Marshall, Huddersfield". I can't find any serial no. on the piano. I was wondering if anyone could give me any info. Many thanks!

The name would be Joshua Marshall, or Huddersfield, and around 1900, his pianos were marked "selected by" because he bought them in from a wholesale maker, and put his own name on them. Serial numbers are no help if we don't know the true maker. I will have a look for you, but I don't think I have any further information so far. See "Aliases" at

Thanks a lot for your information,:D but I can see the name clearly that it is Marshall. Anyway, thanks for ur information very much, I really appreciate that. I can't believe my piano is so old!

Yes, you are quite right, I was told wrongly by the owner, but my directories show that although he was not listed in 1886, he was "limited" by 1894, and still there in 1936. I'll see what else I can find.

Valuation is impossible without on-the-spot inspection, are you in East Anglia? See the Reports button on the PianoGen website, and also Barrie's comments at the top of the forum. Marshall was not listed as a piano maker in 1886, but arrived on the scene by 1894. Around 1905, became a limited company. Still in business up to the Seciond World War, but apparently gone by 1951...

Sorry, I was wrong about the spelling, Marschal was a fake german name used on some of Marshall's pianos.
