Age and history of Berry upright

Post by Sulynn »

I've just bought a second had Nathaniel Berry of London upright piano and am interested to learn more of it's history. The serial number is 24227. The piano tuner suggests it has been polished and the brass plate on the lid has been polished off but the serial number inside has remained intact. I'm not sure what wood it is made from. Any information will be gratefully received!

The name would have been a flimsy transfer under the polish, so it would be lost when the piano was repolished. I think this number suggests a date around 1928, but having just moved from Norfolk to Lincolnshire, I can't put my hands on the right book yet!

However, my Numbers page

explains that dating pianos purely on the basis of numbers is not always as simple as it seems. If you can post photos here, or email to me, I may be able to tell you more. I used to work for Berrys half a century ago!
