Mignon Upright

Post by Skweggnog »

Hi I'm from Australia and just trying to get a rough idea of age on my piano please. There is a number stamped that reads 10980 but another under it in pencil that reads 10959. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mignon is a name which appears on many different pianos, either as a "maker" or a model name. It was a trademark registered in Australia in 1886 by James Charles Wilson Nicholson of Nicholson & Co, music importers of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane in Perth. I have no dates of their serial numbers, I can only guess that it was made around 1897. If you want to search inside the piano for clues, have a look at

It's only an educated guess. Any chance we could see what the WHOLE piano looks like?

Maybe it's nearer 1902?

The painted frame looks like a German one.
I play for my own amazement... :piano;

Yes, with the gold frame below keyboard, the overstrung overdamper, and pedal rocker design, it is certainly German, but sold by Nicholsons as "Mignon", I believe it was named after his granddaughter.
