Seeger piano from Heins & Co.

Post by keeps21 »

Hi all

I've just got myself a piano and was wondering if you could tell me anything about the age, or anything else about the piano?

It's a Seeger Liverpool, upright.

It also has a plate above the keys which reads:

'Phone 1150 Heins & Co, Broad St & Church St Hereford.'

Has a number '3280' in the top near where the key is kept. This number is also repeated on the inside of the panel which comes off the front of the piano. Looks as if it's paint/penned on rather than the stamped in number on the top.

I've added some photos of the piano to my blog as I can have bigger images on there - http://stephenhoult.co.uk/2015/02/09/a-new-piano/

Thanks for any information.

This style with elliptical panels was popular in the twenties, but I can't give you an exact date.

It appears to be a Seeger piano sold by Heins, but Seeger mainly reconditioned pianos, and made very few.

Heins & Co. arrived in Hereford in the 1890s, but their Abergavenny branch was older, and continued into the thirties.

If you want to search for clues inside the piano, have a look at

Your piano also appears to be straight-strung and overdamped.
I was playing the piano in a zoo, when the elephant burst into tears. I said, "Don't you recognize the tune?" He replied, "No, I recognize the ivories!"

Heins & Co. Hereford was the same firm as the better-known Heins & Co. in Abergavenny, but the Hereford branch appeared around the 1890s, and became Ltd. some time after 1914.
