I own a piano of this brand, with serial number 13186. I want to know about its history, age and so on.

Dating pianos purely on the basis of numbers is not always as straightforward as people imagine, and most pianos have several numbers inside. 13186 might indicate that it was made in 1876, but Chappell numbers do some very strange things sometimes. A Chappell upright with numbers suggesting 1848 or 1904 is actually from around 1926. If it really is Victorian, then have a look at my Victorian page at

Are you able to post photos of the whole piano here, or email them to me to post?

Chappell is a famous music firm, their piano-making is said to have begun in 1861, yet serial numbers are published from 1840.
