Sherborne piano

Post by Bill Kibby »

G.H. Sherborne was an ex-employee of Broadwoods who moved to Newcastle-On-Tyne and set up a piano dealership. We have no evidence that he actually made pianos, he was a retailer. Nobody can tell you anything about a piano just from a name, we need to see photos of the whole piano. Piano names are often meaningless, and retailers commonly put their own names onto pianos bought in from anonymous wholesalers, as you can read on my page at
http://pianohistory.info/names.html

There are references to him on my page at

It is difficult to judge, seems to have been altered, and should have pierced fretwork or something in those panels, it might be 1880s. In 1879, Sherborne's stock records showed no sign of any pianos being labelled with his own name.

Happy to help. It would be interesting to figure out more about Sherborne, and we might be able to tell a bit more from interior views with the front panels removed above and below keyboard level.

seems to have been "modernised" about 1900 as there are the screw holes for sconces.
The panels look very out of place.
Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.

Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it

Well spotted Vernon!.... I had to look twice.

From the AA Tuners MI5 task force.... that bottom panel looks like its an upside down 1920's panel, with the 'bottom' (which could be the top) filled in? (I had one identical on a Bell London piano - but the other way up) .... there should be a cross-member at the bottom, and the middle cross member looks rather thin?

also should the inner square panels have some sort of beading/ mouldings?

Would be interesting to check the rear panel screws / pins - usually very small (rusty) slotted flat screws, embedded partly into the rear of the panels at an angle..... watch out for B&Q POZI screws though..... :)
Where are the pedals?
