I had a sleepless night after being made redundant a couple of years ago and all that night, I couldn't get the theme tune for "The Brady Bunch" out of my head. For the life of me, I can't think why!

Anyway, today I have "Rainy Days and Mondays" by the Carpenters having heard it on the radio the other day haven't heard that in ages.

Hi Feg, I usually start at the beginning, but some children get bored quickly with it, they'd rather learn a nice little tune first and then the notation later on. We didn't do much playing yesterday, I got them all to be crotchet soldiers and quickedy quavers

I teach them B, A and G - playing little scales up and then down - some jumping from B to G to B and then we play Hot Cross Buns all still without the book. So far, still fun :D Then..............we all open our books to Page 14! What? Page 14 already??? Yes, Page 14 :D :D :D

The tune on Page 14 is.................................................?

Hot Cross Buns

After than, I go back to earlier tunes and only play those I need to depending on how quickly or otherwise that particular group catches on.

I played for a carol concert at an old peoples' home where a former music teacher/conductor was now living. He was seated beside the piano, and when a sprog with a recorder stood up to 'entertain the lovely old people', I distinctly heard him mutter 'Christ, take me now...'!

Since hearing it in a charity shop in Harborne the other day, I've had 'Babooshka' by Kate Bush on the brain, and I've always been intrigued and mystified by it ever since seeing it on TOTP as a winkle.

Salut D'Amour by Elgar.

It's well and truly stuck as I am researching a suitable repertoire for a concert I am playing in as part of the Balerno Music Festival.

Are you playing the piano part or violin part? In any case, I didn't think you did much piano playing these days Feg.

I'm playing the violin for my sins. I do still play piano when I get the chance. My current battle is with Rachmaninoff in the wonderful key of C# minor.

I always practice the piano accompaniment for my violin pieces as well as the violin solo. I find it helps if I know both parts if either of us gets lost along the way :)

You should do what Gill does, accompany for choirs and 'do' Sunday mornings on the organ (pedalboard purely an option)

The final bit from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach. Supposed to be played allegro but I can only manage moderato at the mo (my SRing is largo).

Not likely, Dave. Every Sunday is not a commitment I am prepared to make at the moment. I do, however, have the offer of the church keys any time I would like to go and play the church organ. I have yet to find the time to do so:(

never mind the Finish the Sentence thread, we should have a Finnish the Sentence thread. I suppose Sibelius is helping you to sight read in Finnish, Giz?

Not tried looking at Sibelius's markings; I use a program online called BYKI ("before you know it") and I have The Kalevala and the first chapter of Genesis (because I will know what the words mean) to look through and see if I recognise anything, but mainly I have a book on my Kindle called Baskerville Koira by A. Conan Doyle, and also the translation, and I am halfway through the first sentence... this is because I don't much like learning phrases without understanding what they're made up of, so I have to check and cross-check every word - Finnish has dozens of case endings which make the words longer and longer. You have to love a language in which "on the first floor" is "ensimäisessä kerroksessa" and "across the street" os "toisella puolella" no to mention things like "liikennevaloissa" for "at the (traffic) lights"

Keeping the old grey matter ticking is important when you get to my vast old age

Best time to keep fit and lose weight is when it's over 20 degrees outside. When it's warm, I can fill my face with tea and biscuits and just do what I can at KF and not worry about having a weight gain. Mind you I have to carry a hand towel around with me though when it's warm

It's a cat in Finnish, quite appropriate (I lurve my cat) and valkoinen means white.

I should call her aanekas kissa. Loud cat. (with umlauts on all the a's)

Tis JSBatch. I haven't got any earworms today, though I ought to have the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't it be Nice" as that's where we're going for four days in October (well three days and a whole day at each end on the train) to celebrate Robin's retirement. We're running out of Nice jokes in this house.

No it isn't; I always thought it was but it was misattibuted to him. Twas a chap called Stozel, apparently. With an umlaut, but I haven't got one of those on my pooter. I played it for my friend's hobo exam and couldn't dislodge it for ages.

Two Little Boys by R*lf H*rris. Mentally bleeping out the potentially rude bits which doesn't leave much less to sing but makes it FAR ruder than it was before.
