Thats a great quote by Chopin! I often look down at the keyboard whilst playing.......... My piano teacher told me that Chopin had small hands, apparently that's why he was very strict about using the exact fingers he specifies when playing his music. Moonlight, have you got the strange symbo...

Ooooh Dave do you reckon your neighbour would let you have a go on the piano? Dave and Moonlight, you both practise so much! I usually try and practice as soon as I get home from work in the evening, and I'll play for about an hour. After an hour I start to get a bit tired and have to stop. I tend t...

Dave, I thought the exact same thing as you when I saw the piece 'Early One Morning'!!! I was browsing through the book in the music shop, saw the title and thought 'no it can't be' and then laughed out loud in the middle of the shop!! It was the episode where he was auditioning to be a holiday redc...

My cousin was doing one of his saxophone grades and was so nervous that he didn't breathe properly whilst playing. He kept blowing but not breathing enough until eventually he was almost hyperventilating and then fainted! Luckily his accompanist rescued the sax and he was allowed to go outside and h...

Hi there Susan, Nerves are such a difficult thing to try and control, and it sounds like your Grade IV experience has knocked your confidence a bit. Try not to be so hard on yourself about your playing - I know that's easier said than done. I'm a perfectionist and will pick apart my performances, bu...

Thank you so much for the advice Gill and Vernon. I was just a bit nervous about telling the tuner how out of the condition the piano is - it feels going to the dentist when you haven't been for a long time and then getting told off!! Lol :-) I've contacted a tuner and he is coming next week so hope...

What are we all learning to play at the moment?
I thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could tell everyone what pieces we're currently learning, what pieces we've just perfected, or what we're struggling to play! At the moment I've just finished working through the book 'Its never too late to play piano' by Pam Wedgewood, and I'm no...

Hey guys :-) Dave, my fingers don't tend to slip off of the keys on my clavinova. However, even though I've had mine for a few weeks now, I'm still very protective of it and I always wash my hands before I play to keep the keys lovely and clean!!! I also moisturise a lot :-) Good luck with the teach...

Very old piano - tuning advice
My parents have your bog standard brown wooden upright piano which hasn't been used in a long time. They would like to get it tuned etc so that it can be used for the grandchildren. The piano hasn't been tuned in 10 years (!!) and in that time it has moved house. I've had a look at the piano and it ...

Mark has put it very well really - if you can afford the acoustic then why not! But if there is a reason for you having a digitial, whatever that may be, I'd suggest playing the 380 to see if there is much difference between that and your 170. What are your reasons for moving away from the 170? Also...

Hi there :-) Lucky you getting the CLP370, my budget only stretched to a 340! I agree with the size of the thing - the box was huge, and very heavy! It said it was a 2 person lift, so we were hoping that me and my boyfriend would manage. But I'm your typical weedy girl and couldn't lift the thing! W...

My new Yamaha has arrived :-)
I have an acoustic piano that I usually practice on at home, but I spend about 3 nights a week at my boyfriend's house, so we decided to get me a piano to practice on at his place. He lives in a barn conversion on the 1st floor, and getting an acoustic in there would be a nightmare, not to mention t...

Trouble with Bass Clef
Hello there :-) I've just started taking piano lessons and am having some problems with bass clef. I've been playing the clarinet for 13 years now and so I've only ever played music in treble clef. I've done theory exams etc and A-Level music so I know how bass clef works, but for some reason I can'...
