How do you mean? In 30 years of tuning I have been asked ONCE to use an alternative temperament. To my mind that doesn't warrant spending a large chunk of tuning tuition on esoteric temperaments on the offchance that 28 years hence someone will want it! :lol: To learn about them and know the interv...

No, we are taught that JSB wrote the 48 to prove that ET worked, as the common view at the time was that it couldn't possibly work in every key. We were taught that other temperaments existed, but that they were so rarely used as to be pointless to learn and practise. We had to learn the principles...

She'll only say I'm c**p anyway, she's the most unsupportive person any piano learner can have for a wife...however I'd rather make up my own mind as to whether I am or whether I am not c**p (but just so it happens she's right anyway). I'd be changing 'the wife' rather than the piano teacher :lol:

Does opening up the head joint make any difference to the pitch? You should be able to lower the pitch by a fair amount that way and you always have a small amount of extra in the bottom joint as well. A basic tuning of unisons & good lever technique is possibly all that is needed really for top notch pianists. .........so its also knowing which string to tune. I would forget about repairs.... if you are playing on a good piano, it won't need any, unless you break a hammer! I'm all for pianis...

I tune a 1700s one with bells and a drum. But I'm not allowed to use the drum pedal because it makes the dog go loopy. Haha, that's brilliant. The only way to get an accurate assessment of your piano and its value (if any) is to contact your local piano tuner and get his/her expert opinion. There is a list of suitably qualified piano tuners by area on this site (links at the left of this page) or via the Pianoforte Tuners' Association webs...
