Gill, I suppose I sound like I have a 'chip on my shoulder' over teaching by the dots and that is probably true but I do think that if you take a 4 year old and only teach them the dots then it will be difficult to reverse it later. Thanks for the advice; it will definitely be very useful. About playing by memory, nobody can do that, what I said was doing it through listening, that means that the ear has a different kind of sound memory and simply attempting to duplicate it is the only trick to learn.
