Re: Name and composer of this charming student piece?

Thanks so much for finding the title and composer of this piece. As a result, there will be many happy piano students of mine who will be able to play it.

Beethoven Waldstein Rondo: Why cross hands?

In the Rondo (third movement) of the Beethoven Waldstein Sonata, the opening section has the right hand playing the arpeggio accompaniment, while the left hand crosses back and forth over it to play the melody. This is quite awkward for me, and I have found that reversing the hands makes it easier. ...

Field Nocturne 4 ornaments and arpeggiation

I would like to know how to play the ornaments and arpeggiation found in the Kohler edition of Field Nocturne 4.

I have attached a score with the measures in question, and multiple-choice options for each ornament or arpeggiation. If there are other options I have not listed, please elaborate.

Re: What's the name of these pieces?

The third piece in the video (00:54) is measures 1-13 from Bach, English Suite 2 in A minor. The pianist adds a cadence consisting of an E4-D4-E4 mordent in the right hand and the note C3 in left hand accompanying the second E.

Re: Trill speed--what is possible?

Thanks for all the useful information. I'm still not sure about the main premise of my question, which is: Can one play 18 notes per second on the piano? If the answer is yes, then I need to do a lot of technical work to get the fingers to move that fast. If the answer is no--it's humanly impossible...

Trill speed--what is possible?

I see many piano works where the tempo is in the 130 beats per minute range and above. In the margins, I see trills written as thirty-second notes (semidemiquavers) for the right hand, where the left hand is playing sixteenth notes (semiquavers). This appears to be the only logical rhythm for the co...

Chopin Rolled Chords

In measure 8 of Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 5, there is a rolled chord in the left hand and a single note in the right hand. What is the order of the notes combined? --top/highest left-hand chord note together with right? --bottom/lowest left-hand chord note together with right? In measure 22 of Prelude...

Re: Trill in Mozart K 545, m. 15

Hello Colin, Your detailed reply was greatly appreciated. Regarding the trill on the F in measure 4, one edition has a semiquaver or 16th note quintuplet f-g-f-E-F, blending the melody (E-F) into the trill as you suggested. I've done more listening to recordings of recognized players, and it still s...

Trill in Mozart K 545, m. 15

In measure 15 of Mozart's piano sonata K 545, there is a trill mark on the note G at the beginning of the measure. All editions I have show an A-G-A-G trill as 32nd notes. I have tried playing this up to tempo, and listened to MIDIs of it, and it sounds wrong. I have listened to recordings of well-k...

Re: electrical metronome that sounds wooden?

Matrix MR-600 sounds like a wood block, has light, metric accents, and volume control.

At this link you can hear the sound:
