Mutian Xu BMus, MMus at the Royal Northern College of Music



Mutian completed her Bachelors with a distinction in piano solo performance at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2008. She received an entrance award to study with Paul Janes, and completed the Masters Course at the RNCM in September 2009.
As a soloist, she was a finalist in the Machida Piano Competition (Tokyo) in 2001, High Schools Association Piano Competition (Kanagawa) in 2002. As a accompanist, she performed in TBS Music Competition, NHK Music Competition, which were broadcasted on radio TBS radio and NHK FM, and in the Japan Choral Association Competition.
Mutian has performed in many festivals at the RNCM including Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Schostakovich, and Messiaen festival. In 2007, Mutian and her duo partner Carla Sousa won the first prize in the School of Wind and Percussion duo competition, Mutian won the RJ Forbes prize for best pianist. Mutian has given solo recitals in Manchester, Tokyo and Kanagawa in Japan, Miribel and Castre in France. Mutian has participated masterclasses and lessons with Paul Roberts, Pawel Skrzypek, Anton Voigt, Thomas Kreuzberger, Stefano Fiuzzi,Alexander Melnikov, Phillippe Cassard, and Nelson Goerner. As an accompanist, Mutian has participated masterclasses with Julius Drake, Ralph Kirshbaum, Karine Georgian and Ivry Gitlis.
In the summer 2008, Mutian was invited to give a solo recital by Jazz pianist David Nelson at the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival. She also made her solo debut in the Ebina Concert Hall in Kanagawa Japan. Mutian and her colleagues established a chamber music group “Northern Horizons” which made success in ten concerts in six countries.
