Piano makers' production dates and serial numbers (past and present to 1980) for most North American brands including historical notes.
A substantial appendix of previously unpublished data researched and contributed by Piano Archives, England.
The age of a piano can usually be identified by the manufacturer's serial number which is customarily displayed on either the soundboard, frame, wrestplank, or case of the instrument. Matching this serial number against the manufacturer's sequence of serial numbers and production dates will confirm the year or period of manufacture for a particular instrument. It must be stressed however, that some of the dates relating to serial numbers up until the early 20th century should not be treated as `unimpeachable': many company records have either been lost or destroyed and therefore the production details cannot be authenticated. However, in an attempt to ensure the greatest possible accuracy the entries for each brand have been submitted and checked by either the manufacturer concerned or the most reliable source available.
