We have a large selection of upright and grand pianos by Yamaha and Kawai plus many other famous makes. Japanese pianos make an excellent investment due to their high quality and long life expectancy. All of our Japanese pianos carry five years written guarantee. (never buy a piano on appearance alone.) The wrest plank is the part of the piano, behind the frame into which the tuning pins are embedded and is the heart of the piano. During manufacture, the tuning pins are inserted into holes in the wrest plank and the strings are wrapped round them to provide the tension to hold the piano in tune. Most pre war pianos had wrest planks made out of solid timber and constant turning of the pins each time the piano is tuned puts a strain on the wood and the holes eventually become oval in shape and will not hold the strings in tension and the piano quickly goes out of tune. It is impractical to fit a new wrest plank to a piano as this would involve re stringing the piano and the cost of the total operation would almost certainly be more than the piano was worth. The wrest planks on modern pianos are all made out of many laminations of wood and this gives a far longer life than any piano made between the turn of the century and the 1930s when the majority of pianos were sold in the U.K. Because there were few new pianos sold in this country from the 1950s onwards, we source most of our modern instruments from Japan as the Japanese have the highest ownership of pianos in the world and the quality of their manufacturing is acknowledged by professional musicians everywhere. |
